Copy cats will always be around and they float in varying degrees. It happens in just about every industry but at least some are a bit slicker than others. The bottom line…..for every brand ambassador or tastemaker, there’s dozens of copy cats refreshing their methods instead of reinventing their own. It’s a weird phenomenon that can be blamed a lack of creativity but fuck it, that’s what life is all about. In the end the truth of the matter is that we all copy each other in one way or another when it comes to the business and the market we choose to attract but it’s in the style, execution and delivery where one must stand up and stand out.
In the end, some people borrow styling cues and others change it up but when others seem to emulate pretty much spot on what you’ve done then you should be flattered and honored. The reason I write this is because in the past few days I’ve been getting bombarded by emails asking if I’m upset that people have been trying to copy our content and the answer is simple: NO. I’m not mad at all, and actually I think our team is honored. Besides, lifes’s too short to get tangled in drama. A lot of times people get defensive because they feel like they can’t reinvent themselves or their formulas but with us that’s not the case. The bottom line, you’ve heard it once and you’ll hear it again, “Imitation is the best form of flattery.” So after dozens of emails floated in asking if the staff and I were bothered about getting knocked off on different levels I smiled and asked a simple question, “Do cover bands ever get into the rock and roll hall of fame?”
They got the point. Besides…competition is good and we’ve only just begun.
